Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers were formed in 1946, and were originally named the Syracuse Nationals. The team relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1963 as they were struggling in the Midwest as the Syracuse Nationals were too small to be profitable. Their name then changed from the Syracuse Nationals to the Philadelphia 76ers to pay tribute to their new home. They were renamed the Philadelphia 76ers after 1776 which was the year the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. The name the Philadelphia 76ers was quickly shortened down to the ‘sixers’ which is the name they became known as by the press and their fans. The Philadelphia 76ers currently play in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association.
